Be empowered with body-neutral health care
Diet culture is pervasive in our society, and its damaging effects are far-reaching. For many people, this pressure leads to a lifetime of chronic dieting, disordered eating, guilt and shame.
As a HAES® psychologist with over 20 years of experience, I have a deep understanding and recognition of the negative consequences that diet culture can cause.
Through a body-neurtral lens and with ‘Health at Every Size®’ principles, I can help you break free from the cycle of yo-yo dieting and body shaming which will reconnect and restore your relationship with food and your body with a non-dieting, weight-neutral approach.
Celebrate diversity and create a positive relationship with your body and food
With a passion for reducing the negative impact that ‘diet culture’ has on your psychological and physical wellbeing, I believe that all bodies are valuable and deserve respect. The notion that thin bodies are ‘healthier’ and ‘more valuable’ than larger bodies is not only harmful and inaccurate but can lead to unhealthy behaviour such as crash dieting and extreme exercise.
Popular “dieting” approaches are ineffective in the long run, and they can also take a toll on your mental and physical health. This can cause low self-worth, body shame, stress, physical inflammation, self-harm behaviours, disordered eating, and a disordered body concept/image.
Kokoro Psychology challenges the messages that diet culture promotes and instead focuses on celebrating body and cultivating a positive relationship with food and joyful movement.
By practising the non-dieting and body accepting, Health at Every Size® principles, you will enhance your overall sense of self and health, rather than prioritising weight, shape or size.
The non-dieting movement reflects the understanding that restrictive weight loss diets are not the key to health and wellbeing. Dieting often leads to two major harmful outcomes:
Relentless path of yo-yo dieting and weight cycling
Obsessively focusing on weight and shape where eating is no longer a relaxing activity, which ultimately increases the risk of a clinical eating disorder
When you embrace body acceptance and prioritise self-compassion, kindness and a grateful approach to your body, you can begin to heal and recover.
Kokoro Psychology understands the challenges you face and offers therapy that is weight inclusive and non-judgemental.
Heath at Every Size® is a weight-neutral approach focussing on health and wellbeing, not numbers. The HAES® principles from the Association for Size Diversity and Health are:
Weight inclusivity
Health enhancement
Respectful care
Eating for wellbeing
Life-enhancing movement
